About Lawrie Walters
Lawrie Walters was born in Gosford Hospital and then lived for 10 years at Long Jetty on the Central Coast of NSW before travelling and eventually settling on Bribie Island, Qld with his family.
He started using computers in 1978 while at Caboolture State High School when they purchased an Apple II and then an Apple IIc. Luckily one of his teachers, Mr John Andrews, had completed a degree in computer studies and saw immediately that Lawrie had an innate ability with computers.
While living on Bribie Island he had the opportunity to learn photography and darkroom techniques from Professor Selwyn Everist, a renowned and published photo-botanist specialising in Australian noxious plants.
After studying Australian Environment Science with an emphasis on computer studies, he worked at the Princess Alexander Hospital in Brisbane.
During this time he was also an active member of the Australian Army Reserves as a driver in 2 Transport Squadron, trained regularly at the gym and was coached in springboard diving by Barbara Donnet and competitive ice skating.
In 1985, he moved to Sydney and immediately started working as a medical typist and secretary while looking for work in a computer related field. Luckily this did not take long and his first position was with Arthur S Cave and Co, a Patent Attorney, where he was employed as the systems administrator of a newly installed Wang system.
From 1986 until August 2008, Lawrie was working many varied jobs in various roles and just about every industry. Although this was stressful, it did allow him to accumulate a significant amount of knowledge about different businesses, clients, systems and programming languages.
